Rooted in 90s Seattle Grunge rock culture, this pendant draws inspiration from Nirvana’s iconic X-eyed smiley symbol made famous by Kurt Cobain. The cross-eye smiley is an ironic anti-happiness totem: a warped twist on the classic cheerful smiley face, representing youth rebellion, inner numbness and raw counterculture spirit.We have recreated this legendary grunge symbol by hand-cutting a vintage U.S. quarter, skillfully blending the rebellious motif with a bottle-cap-style serrated edge and a hand-carved laurel wreath.

Craftsmanship

Handcrafted from vintage US coin. Artisans carefully cut the coin to form the iconic cross-eye smiley silhouette. The edge is hammered into a serrated bottle-cap profile, hand-engraved laurel wreath wraps around the coin perimeter. Original coin relief and lettering are preserved underneath. A sturdy hand-finished silver bail is soldered on, matched with a textured link chain. Each piece is individually handworked, so subtle texture variations exist, making every pendant unique.
